The letter

Notice of intention to apply a charge. Payment of £248.00 is required on or before 14 March.

What it means

A fee is being added to your account. You have until 14 March to pay it or dispute it.

What to do

Pay it, or write back before the deadline if you think it's wrong.

Where it says so

“required on or before 14 March”

How it works

Letters from councils, banks, tax offices and landlords are written for the people who send them. Plain is for the people who receive them.

How it will work

Take a photo of the letter, or add a PDF. Plain reads the page and gives you three things: what the letter is about, what you are being asked to do, and the date you need to do it by. Each answer comes with the line of the letter it is based on.

How we're building it

We are testing Plain against a collection of real-world style letters before it ships, and measuring how often it gets the deadline and the action right. If it isn't dependable enough, it won't be released.

Plain explains letters. It doesn't give legal, tax or financial advice, and it will tell you when a letter is one to take to a person.

What, what next, by when

Every letter comes back as three short answers, not a wall of text.

Shows its working

Each answer points to the line of the letter it came from, so you can check it.

Built to stay on your phone

The aim is for reading and explaining to happen on your device, with no account and no uploads.

Honest about its limits

For legal, tax and money decisions it says so plainly, and tells you when to ask a person.

Plain is made by Partech Systems Limited.
