Why it’s different

A road of lamps

A story along the road

An old smith tells how, as a boy, he took the lamplighter's pole and lit the road from Haven to the Far Light. Six towns on a painted map, each with its own street of eight puzzles and a short story page when you arrive and when you light it.

Tap to turn, drag to slide

Tap a mirror and it turns a quarter of the way round. Later streets have lamps on brass rails that you drag into the beam. On a computer, use the mouse.

Each lamp lights the next

A street is eight short puzzles in a row. The lamp you light in one becomes the light that starts the next, so the whole street comes on lamp by lamp.

Prisms, glass and rails

Prisms split the beam in two. Ruby and jade glass colour it, and a coloured lamp only lights in its own colour. Every puzzle has a par, undo is free and so is starting again. There's a new street every day.

How it plays

Lamplighter is a light-beam puzzle with a story. An old smith tells how, as a boy of ten, he took the lamplighter's pole and lit the road from Haven to the Far Light, so that dark towns could remember each other. You do it with him: tap a mirror to turn it, and send the beam on to every lamp.

The road runs through six towns: Emberfield, Gloamwood, Frostveil, Stormreach, Cinder Cathedral and the Unlit. Each has a street of eight short puzzles. The lamp you light in one puzzle starts the beam in the next, so the street comes on lamp by lamp. Emberfield is mirrors only. Gloamwood brings prisms that split the beam and ruby and jade glass that colour it. In Frostveil some lamps slide along brass rails, and the last three towns mix everything.

Each mirror turn or slide is a move, and every puzzle has a par. There are 48 puzzles on the road, and a new street every day.

Tips

How to play well

  1. Work back from the lamp

Ask which way the beam has to arrive at the lamp, then which mirror could send it that way.

  2. Not every mirror matters

Some mirrors are only there to tempt you. If a mirror isn't on the beam's path, leave it alone.

  3. Watch the colour

Once the beam goes through tinted glass, it stays that colour. Light the plain lamps before it does.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is Lamplighter free? Are there ads?

Yes, it's free to play in your browser. There are no ads while you're lighting a street and no banners. Your first ten puzzles have no ads at all; after that an ad may appear between puzzles, at most once every ten and never twice within five minutes. Show me a mirror is the only other ad, it plays only if you choose it, and the first three puzzles need no ad for it.

What does Show me a mirror do?

It turns one mirror to the angle the solution needs and rings it in amber.

How do I open more puzzles?

Light a lamp and the next puzzle opens. Light the last lamp on a street and the next street opens.

Where is my progress saved?

In your browser on this device. There's no account, and clearing the site's data deletes it.

Who tells the story?

Bram Holloway, an old smith, who carries Haven's lantern in our story game Lanternfall. In Lamplighter he tells the lantern how he lit the road as a boy. You do not need to know Lanternfall to play.

Can I skip the story pages?

Yes. Every page has a Skip button, and each one only plays the first time you reach it.
