Why it’s different

What makes Letter Rot different

One letter at a time

A letter rots and gets stuck. Change one other letter to make a real word again. No word twice.

Beat the fuse

The fuse gets shorter as you go, and the words grow to five letters. Faster fixes and rarer letters score more.

Daily rot

One game a day, the same for everyone. Share your result grid and your chain of words.

Three looks

Wooden tiles with creeping mould, an old green screen, or newsprint and ink. Switch any time in Settings.

How it plays

Letter Rot is a word game about keeping a word alive. You hold a word, like LAMP. Then a letter rots, and you're looking at LOMP. That tile is stuck now. Change one other letter to make a real word again, LOOP perhaps, before the fuse burns out.

Each fix becomes the next word, so your words grow into a chain. The fuse gets shorter the further you go, and after fifteen fixes the words grow to five letters. Let the rot spread three times and the game is over.

Tips

How to play well

  1. Wrong letters cost nothing

A letter that doesn't make a word just shakes the tile. You only lose a life when the fuse burns out, so try ideas quickly rather than waiting until you're sure.

  2. Rare letters pay well

Each fix scores 10, up to 10 more for speed, and a bonus for the letter you place. A Q or Z adds 18 and a J or X adds 14, which can beat a quick fix with a common letter.

  3. Keep typing

The tile you picked stays selected after a fix unless the rot lands on it, so you can often type the next letter straight away. On a keyboard, type letters directly and use the arrow keys or 1 to 5 to pick a tile.

  4. Save your hint for later

You get one hint per game. It marks a tile that leads to an everyday word, and the fuse waits while the ad plays, so it is worth more once the fuse has shortened from nine seconds towards three and a half.

  5. Learn from the misses

When the rot spreads, the game shows up to three words you could have made. No word can be used twice in a game, so a word from earlier in your chain won't save you.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is Letter Rot free, and what ads does it have?

It's free and paid for by ads, with no banners. A full-screen ad can appear between games from your fifth finished game, then at most once every five games and never within 90 seconds of the last. Video ads only play when you choose one, for a hint or to keep going.

What does Keep going do?

In the main game, if you saved at least three words, you can watch an ad once per game to carry on with one life and a fresh word. It isn't offered in the daily rot.

Is there a daily puzzle?

Yes. The daily rot is the same for everyone and you get one try. A new one starts at midnight your local time. Your result grid shows green for fixes made with at least half the fuse left, yellow for slower fixes and red where the rot spread.

Where is my progress saved?

Only on your device. There's no account, so your best score and daily streak don't move between devices, and uninstalling the app deletes them.

Can I play without an internet connection?

Yes, in the Android app. The word lists are built into the game.

Is the browser version different from Android?

It's the same game, and you can play it with a keyboard. There's no vibration setting, no usage statistics are sent, and ads come from Google's web ads. If no ad is available, the hint or extra life is free. Progress in the browser is kept separately from the app.
