What makes Stowaway different

Hidden across the gaps

Drag across a stowaway, or tap its first and last letters. Boxes show how many are hiding and how long each is.

How it plays

Stowaway is a word game about words hiding in plain sight. Read "Thor sent a note" and you might miss the HORSE tucked across the gap. "The maze brambles" has a ZEBRA in it.

Every sentence has a theme and a few stowaways. Drag across one to catch it, and the boxes at the top fill in. Find them all and the sentence sails on. If you're stuck, a hint shows where a word starts.

Tips

How to play well

  1. Read the letters, not the words

Stowaways run across the spaces, so let your eye slide over the gaps. It helps to read the sentence as one long run of letters.

  2. Use the boxes

The boxes at the top show how many words are hiding and how long each one is, shortest first. Knowing you need a five-letter animal narrows the search a lot.

  3. Letters can be shared

A letter already marked can belong to another stowaway too, so don't skip parts of the sentence you've already used.

  4. Wrong guesses are free

A wrong drag just shakes the sentence, so test a hunch. If dragging is fiddly, tap the first letter and then the last.

  5. How hints work

Each hint shows where a word starts, beginning with the shortest. Once every remaining word has had its start shown, the next hint finds one for you. In the daily voyage, words found with help show yellow in your grid.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is Stowaway free, and what ads does it have?

It's free and paid for by ads, with no banners. A full-screen ad can appear after your tenth finished level or daily voyage, then at most once every ten and never within five minutes of the last. Video ads only play when you ask for a hint.

Is there a limit on hints?

No. Each hint is a short video ad you choose to watch. In the browser, if no ad is available, the hint is free.

Is there a daily puzzle?

Yes. The daily voyage is three sentences from three different themes, the same for everyone, with a new one at midnight your local time. It's timed, and the clock stops while the game is out of view.

How many levels are there?

There are over 300 sentences, ordered from easiest to hardest. The easiest have the fewest hidden words and the shortest sentences.

Where is my progress saved?

Only on your device. There's no account, so your level and daily results don't move between devices, and uninstalling the app deletes them.

Is the browser version different from Android?

It's the same game. There's no vibration setting, no usage statistics are sent, ads come from Google's web ads, and progress is kept separately from the app.
