Why it’s different

A dial, not a race

Turn it like a dial

Put a finger on a ring and drag it round the centre. It clicks into place one segment at a time. On a computer, drag with the mouse.

Every mosaic has a par

Par is the fewest moves it can be done in, worked out by the game for every mosaic. Match it for three gold stones. Undo is free.

Rings that turn together

From mosaic eight, some rings are linked. Turn the ring with solid jewels and the hollow-jewel ring turns too, sometimes the other way.

A mosaic a day

Thirty mosaics, from three loose rings to five rings with three linkages, and a new mosaic every day. Bigger at the weekend.

How it plays

Ringwright is a ring puzzle set in a Byzantine mosaic. A round picture of gold, marble, lapis and garnet stones on deep teal has been cut into three to five rings, and each ring has been turned out of line.

Drag round the centre to turn a ring back. It clicks one segment at a time. The small picture at the top shows the finished mosaic, and a single red thread of stones runs straight up to the jewel at the top when every ring is home.

From mosaic eight, some rings are linked: turning one turns another with it, the same way or the other way. Each step is a move, and every mosaic has a par, the fewest moves it can be set in. There are thirty mosaics and a new one every day.

Tips

How to play well

  1. Follow the red thread

One line of red stones runs from the centre to the jewel at the top. Line it up in each ring and the rest of the picture follows.

  2. Fix the driver first

A linked ring is moved by its driver, but turning it on its own leaves the driver alone. So set the ring with solid jewels first, then the hollow one.

  3. Go the short way round

A ring three steps one way is five steps the other on an eight-segment board. Each step counts, so turn the short way.

Questions

Asked and answered

Is Ringwright free? Are there ads?

Yes, it's free to play in your browser. There are no ads while you're turning rings and no banners. Your first five mosaics have no ads at all; after that an ad may appear between mosaics, at most once every five and never twice within two minutes. Show me a turn is the only other ad, and it plays only if you choose it.

What does Show me a turn do?

It lights up the best ring to turn next and draws an arrow the way to turn it, with a line saying how many steps.

How do I open more mosaics?

Three mosaics are always open ahead of the ones you've set. Set one and the next opens.

Will I lose my place if I leave?

No. Each ring's position and your move count are saved as you go, so you can close the page and carry on later.

Where is my progress saved?

In your browser on this device. There's no account, and clearing the site's data deletes it.
